Alaska Seafood Sushi Tasting

Come join the Elk River Area Food Co-op and Brandon Grochow with My Alaska Seafood Connection as we learn about seafood and taste some Sushi. We'll also discuss why the “Sea-to-Fork” concept offers advantages over the typical seafood distribution chain, and how it allows consumers to feel more connected to their food source. Our instructor will talk about health and the recommended amount of seafood consumption.We will discuss what to look for when buying and consuming seafood. As an added bonus, Brandon will teach us how to make our own sushi rolls and all participants will be able to take home their sushi mats and spoons.

Instructor Bio: Brandon Grochow is 37 years old and was born and raised in Dassel, MN. He attended Saint John’s University and graduated in 2001 with a Degree in Business Management and a Minor in Environmental Studies. Brandon moved to Homer, Alaska, a small community centered around tourism and commercial fishing in 2006. While in Alaska, he had a job in the financial industry and worked directly with commercial fishermen for over nine years. He intended on moving to Alaska for one year and fell in love with the pristine and beautiful land and sea. As he looks back, the beauty of Alaska was amazing, but the amazing community and lifestyle are what kept him there for nearly 10 years. While in Alaska, Brandon enjoyed hiking, camping, and cross-country skiing with friends and his dog Cash. He liked hunting and gathering food sources, which was also a great way to get out and enjoy nature. His favorite wild sources of food included salmon, blueberries and salmonberries, fiddleheads, morels, and nettle.
